Have a Thoughtful Memorial Day

If saying “Happy Memorial Day” doesn’t feel right to you, you’re not alone. Saying “Have a thoughtful Memorial Day” is a way to acknowledge this national American holiday while paying respects to those it honors.

As a kid, I often confused Memorial Day with Veteran’s Day. I’ve got it straight now, though! According to USO.org, Memorial Day is a holiday on the last Monday in May which honors those who died in military service. Veteran’s Day, a holiday on November 11th, honors all who served in the military.

Before partaking in the cookouts and gatherings often held during this weekend, I encourage you to take a few minutes to learn about the holiday and possibly educate others you’re gathering with.

Here are ways to honor fallen heroes on Memorial Day:

  1. Pause for a moment of silence at 3pm local time for the National Moment of Remembrance.
  2. Watch the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS
  3. Visit a military cemetery or war memorial
  4. Wear a red poppy. You can read the origins of the poppy as a remembrance symbol on here.

In honor of the holiday – and Brim’s roots in the food and beverage space – here is a recipe for a simple beverage the whole family can enjoy, featuring the quintessentially wholesome summer fruit, the strawberry:

How to make a zero-proof Strawberry Slushie

You’ll need:

  • 1/4 cup of lime juice.
  • 3/4 cup of orange juice.
  • 10 strawberries fresh or frozen.
  • 1 tablespoon of agave nectar.
  • 3-4 cups of ice.
  • Glassware of your choice.
  • 1 sliced strawberry, for garnish.
  • 1 lime wheel or wedge, for garnish.
  • Finally, if you’re making this a high octane drink, this recipe is versatile! Grab 2oz of tequila to make this a margarita. Or 2oz of vodka to make this a grown-up slushie. Or 2oz of rum to make this a tropical drink.

Steps:

  1. Add the lime juice, orange juice, agave, and ice into a high-speed blender.
  2. Blend on pulse mode to achieve your preferred level of slushiness.
  3. Pour into your glassware.
  4. If you’re adding alcohol, add in the 2oz shot directly into your glassware before pouring the slushie.
  5. Garnish your cocktail with the strawberry slice and/or lime wheel or wedge.
  6. Enjoy! Mabuhay! (Tagalog for, “Cheers!”)
Don’t those look delicious? After gathering the ingredients, it took me less than 5 minutes to make. Easy peasy!
